A 2017 white Mitsubishi Outlander station wagon was stolen from a house on Pakenham St, Echuca, about 3am while members of the household were asleep.
Detective Senior Constable Troy Wickham said “someone gained entry into the property through a rear door, stole keys to a car and then stole that vehicle.”
Police were notified and attended the scene after 7am.
On Friday afternoon the stolen vehicle was located at Cummeragunja.
The car was found in a similar condition to before it was taken.
The vehicle is currently being forensically processed for any evidence of the perpetrator.
Det Sen Constable Wickham urges people to keep their house and any vehicles locked at all times overnight, even if you are staying in the house.
Locking doors “may well have prevented what happened on this occasion,” he said.
Campaspe police are currently making inquiries.
Det Sen Constable Wickham has requested public assistance with the matter.
“We’re appealing to anyone that might know something about it to get into contact with us,” he said.
Anyone who may have witnessed a vehicle with the Victorian registration number 1LB-8ML between the dates of January 24 and 28 is urged to get in touch with police.
Individuals with relevant information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Echuca Police Station on 5483 1500.
The incident has been labelled as an aggravated burglary not because there was a physical altercation but because there were people asleep in the house at the time.
