After a meeting between the GVL board on Wednesday night and club presidents last Thursday, the region’s premier competition said it was awaiting further guidance from the Victorian government.
Speculation is rife competitions will abandon competitions following the Heathcote District Football Netball League’s decision to cancel its season – the first in the state.
Clubs are able to begin organised training in groups of 10 from Monday, but that choice is at each side’s discretion.
“The GVL will continue to await the announcements from the State Government in relation to the easing of restrictions, including those around crowd numbers and the numbers of people at outdoor gatherings,” GVL chairman David Roff said.
“These announcements will be a major deciding factor as to whether the 2020 season goes ahead or not.
“The GVL Board is working with all of its member clubs to ensure they are following all the guidelines as released by Netball Victoria and AFL Victoria, as well as those from the state and federal governments.
“We hope to be in a position to make a decision on the season in coming weeks which will provide clarity to clubs, our players, members, partners and volunteers.”
GVL operations manager Josephine Spencer said the league would put the health and safety of people at the forefront of any decision made.
“We will work with clubs to provide as much support as they need as we navigate the weeks ahead,” she said.
“The GVL is committed to positive action during this time.
“It is imperative we all work together to ensure engagement within our clubs is maintained and everyone involved with clubs maintains strong links to their clubs and their communities.”
Murray League officials are expected to meet on Monday night to discuss their competition's short-term future.
