Maher, who was named Moama’s B grade champion player last season, said a love of the sport attracted him to play a bigger role in the local community.
“One of our goals for the season ahead is to get more kids playing cricket,” he said.
“Sometimes it can be a challenge to get kids playing right through to the senior grades and hopefully that is something we can change.
“And I also want to be helping those kids who are already playing to get the best out of themselves as players.
“I’m also committed to helping to make the GMC’s women’s pathway stronger as well.”
Maher will bring plenty of experience to the role having been a major factor in the development of a regular seasoned cricket competition in Tennent Creek in the Northern Territory.
During his four-year stint in the Top End, was employed by the indigenous health co-operative Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation, helping to establish interest in other sports including touch rugby, basketball and volleyball.
“It was a terrific experience,” the former Euroa resident said.
“We managed to get a cricket association up and running as well as having regular numbers in teams.
“I learnt a lot during my experience and hopefully I can use some of my knowledge in the GMC environment.”
