AFL Goulburn Murray has finalised its player points system for each of the four competitions in its jurisdiction after it was ticked off by the working party.
Goulburn Valley and Murray league clubs will be able to field sides with a total of up to 42 points each week next year.
Meanwhile in the Kyabram District league, senior coaches will have 43 points to play with.
The Picola District league has been allocated the most points in the region with 45.
Players are given a points total of between one and six depending on the level they have played at in previous seasons.
One point is given to someone who is classified as a ‘homegrown player’ which includes those who have played all their junior football at that club.
While someone who has played an AFL game in the past three seasons is worth six points – if they have not returned to their home club.
Echuca Football Netball Club's Simon Eishold described the system as something "clubs simply have to deal with.”
“Having 42 points is a great outcome as it really benefits our playing lists,” he said.
“We've only got a minimal number of guys who are worth more than one.
“We have to consider ourselves lucky when Andrew Walker can walk right out of the AFL system and be worth just one point. I like how the system rewards loyalty from elite players.”
Moama Football Netball Club president Matt Lake said the Magpies would continue to build from within, hoping to say well below the maximum 42 points.
“We’ve always made it our goal to develop our juniors first,” he said.
“It’s important to have players progressing from your junior program to the senior ranks for the long-term future of the club.
“We will normally have a couple of ‘travellers’ and I wouldn’t expect that to change.
“But with the reduction in the salary cap I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more people playing for their junior clubs.
“And that is only going to benefit community football in the long run.”
