Todd Murphy named in Victoria's opening Sheffield Shield squad
MOAMA'S Todd Murphy is well aware he is only at the top of his bowling stride as a professional cricketer.

But most importantly Cricket Victoria’s selectors believe he can’t be too far away from following through and making a first-class debut.
The Daniel Vettori-lookalike has been named in Victoria’s 18-man squad for the opening rounds of the Sheffield Shield season starting later this month.
And Murphy said his selection came down to having a greater understanding of his own ability.
“Having conversations with more senior guys around the squad has been really good for that,” he said.
“I’ve been seeking feedback from the senior batters and Jon Holland who is the senior spinner in the team.
“It’s been about what you need to succeed at the state level.
“Having the chance to have regular conversations with senior guys is something you can’t take for granted because they’ve played for Australia and know what it takes to get the best out of themselves.”
The Victorian team entered a two-week quarantine hub in Adelaide on Monday, October 5 with South Australia hosting all six states.
Victoria will be without key players Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and James Pattinson who are unavailable due to Indian Premier League commitments.
“I’m looking forward to the next six weeks away, it is going to be really good,” Murphy said.
“We played a few practice matches throughout pre-season and everyone knew we were competing for places in the squad the whole way.
“After the last games we played they just announced the squad.
“I thought I would be around the mark, but I was thrilled when my name was read out.”
Victoria’s 2020-21 campaign will be unlike any other the team has embarked on before.
With so many COVID-19 restrictions in place, Murphy is expecting everything to be very different.
“The biggest change will come from the bowling point of view with no saliva able to be used,” he said.
“It is going to be a very different season, but I think the people who adapt the best will have the most success.
“We were super fortunate. The whole way through we were given exemptions to keep training.
“I think being away from home it would have been really difficult not to train and be stuck in a little townhouse in moment.
“Training helped to break up the boredom you had in isolation.”
Should Murphy be given the chance to play in a Shield match, there is every opportunity he could face current Australian internationals.
“It is pretty crazy with COVID-19 at the moment meaning there aren’t too many international games being played,” Murphy said.
“There is going to be serious talent in all the teams in the first four rounds and if I did get the opportunity to bowl to them, I think it would be a pinch yourself moment.
“I’d love to take on the challenge and see where I’m at.”
Despite the excitement of what he has experienced in the past few weeks, Murphy knows he still has plenty of work to do.
“Representing Victoria is the biggest opportunity I might have,” he said.
“It is something I’ve dreamt of for the past 15 years. I know I’m still a little bit away from that, but I am working towards that.
“If it did come in the next six weeks, it would be unreal.”
