She has a simple motto ‘run chatty, run happy’.
In 2004 in her early 30s with three kids under five, Bec began running to get active.
With the support and encouragement of her husband Steve, she also started her nursing degree in Bendigo, and is now a theatre and infection control nurse.
Bec’s first running event was in 2005 where she did the “run leg” of the Echuca Triathlon with her sister and a friend.
She then ran her first 10 km at the Sussan’s Women's Fun Run and two years later she was running half-marathons.
In 2008, her first year working in theatre, she ran a marathon.
Through dedication and consistency Bec earned the title “Ironman” in 2013.
Bec is well connected with local running groups and runs with various people throughout the week.
She also loves participating in the weekly triathlons during the summer months.
One of Bec’s most challenging events was the Great Ocean Road marathon.
The course is 45 km, hilly and with limited spectators to spur you on.
Her favourite event is the Gold Coast Marathon, especially as this often coincides with a beach holiday with friends.
Bec has completed too many events to mention but a once-in-a-lifetime experience was the Oxfam 100 she completed in 2018 with three great friends.
This event required different training and all was about time on her feet, rather than distance.
Bec’s team ‘3 Scrubbers and Another’ all finished and was the 132nd team out of 506 to cross the finish line.
She’ll never forget the challenges of this event and the support they gave to each other for the 25 hours and 10 minutes it took to complete.
A highlight of 2020 has been becoming a parkrun race director.
She loves the parkrun ethos and the community spirit.
She also felt it would help her confidence, especially in public speaking.
Another highlight was in January, competing in a team for the Echuca Tri.
It was 15 years since her first event, but this time she took the swim.
Bec encourages women who aren’t running yet to have a go and to not be self-conscious.
A highlight of Bec’s life achievements has been helping others achieve their running goals.
She’s supported and run beside several friends as they’ve completed their first events.
With 17 years’ experience as a runner, Bec’s top tips are safe pieces of advice.
These include surrounding yourself with supportive people, find a training plan and stick with it, take rest days as these are just as important as training days and run at a pace you can chat at.
