But being trackside still felt surreal.
“Melbourne Cup Day is one of the biggest two events on our calendar,” he said.
“It’s still crazy to think that we had no crowd. The build-up was completely different to what we are used to.
“Normally I would get to the Tuesday and be so tired from all the preparation.
“I’d like to think we won’t be facing a similar situation this time next year.”
Fans hoping to see a local prevail had to wait for the final race of the day when Jim Lake’s Honorellay took out the bet365 Odds Drifter Protector BM58 Handicap.
Armstrong said Lake’s winner capped off a terrific day of racing.
“We’re really happy with the strength of the fields which ran,” he said.
“Having a local winner is always a highlight and we’re really pleased for Jim.
“A few of our other trainers had some good runs so I’m sure they’ll be happy with what they’ve seen.”
The club’s next meeting is now scheduled for early December and Armstrong said he was hoping some spectators would be able to attend.
“We will be watching Sunday’s announcement from Premier Daniel Andrews very closely,” he said.
“It’s great to see case numbers have come right down and hopefully that means there is an easing of restrictions across all industries.
“The sooner we are able to welcome back crowds the better it will be for our sport.”
