There remains hope the biggest event on the Echuca-Moama calendar will go ahead between April 16 and 18.
Before Christmas, Ski Racing Australia’s chief executive Cam McConville said any decision on the proposed mini-season, which would run between February and July, would be made in the new year.
“The recent COVID outbreak in NSW has affected Christmas plans for many and has thrown us another curve ball as we get closer to being able to get back onto the water,” he said on December 24.
“In light of this the Board of SRA have, in consultation with our event stakeholders, decided to wait another 12 days before making a final decision on the proposed mini-season.
“While we appreciate this is frustrating, we do not want to leave any stone unturned in trying to get our sport back on the water.
“We will be back in contact the week commencing January 4.”
Last month, Moama Water Sports Club president Steve Shipp said the club would love to see the race run in some form.
“This is the main event for ski racing,” he said.
“It’s a huge event not only for ski racing, but for our towns and the community around it. It’s a huge part of who we are, and we are really excited by the prospect of the race taking place.”
A move to April is not without precedent.
The 2002 race was moved back two months, taking place on April 20 and 21, after the event was unable to acquire insurance.
The event saw the first of six victories for Mark Cranny’s Hellrazor boat.
