Eagles coach Adam Sutherland has welcomed another player into the mix following the signing of Mitch Jensen.
Jensen joins the club from Doutta Stars in the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) where he played more than 200 games.
He was also part of Footscray’s VFL premiership in 2014 and has played in the Ovens and Murray Football League with Wangaratta.
Sutherland said he was excited by what Jensen could potentially add to the side for the 2021 season.
“He is actually a good friend of Tom Wallis (another of United’s new recruits),” Sutherland said.
“Tom spoke very highly of him and recommended we sit down for a chat which we did in the past week.
“Mitch is excited to get up here and test himself against some strong teams in the Murray Football League.
“I spoke to a few people who have coached against Mitch when he played in the Riddell District competition for Romsey and they told me he was one of the premier players.
“Hopefully he can bring that sort of form to Echuca United.”
Sutherland said he expected to use Jensen primarily as a forward, given his goalkicking pedigree which has seen him kick more than 300 goals in his career.
But he also has the ability to make an impact in the middle of the ground.
“We were looking to add some more scoring power,” Sutherland explained.
“I believe we’ve got a strong midfield with a lot of ball-winning ability and it was important we gave them a target to kick to.
“Goalkickers make a massive difference in local footy and we’re hoping Mitch can do that.
“But we’ve also been impressed with our younger guys at training and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do against an opposition.”
United’s first practice matches of the season are now just several weeks away.
The Eagles will face two EDFL sides in Westmeadows and Sunbury.
● ON THE netball front, United has confirmed Grant Matthews has been re-appointed as the A grade coach.
Matthews was set to return to the role before the 2020 season was cancelled.
“Grant will bring a wealth of netball knowledge and be a great mentor to our juniors,” a post on the club’s Facebook page said.
United will open their Murray League season on Good Friday against arch-rivals Moama.
