The Murray Bombers are set to compete in the atWork Australia pre-season cup at Rumbalara on Sunday, February 28.
The competition will involve teams from across the region including Wangaratta, Benalla, Eaglehawk, Benalla, Wodonga, Shepparton, Mooroopna, and Tatura.
With the 2020 season scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, all footballers are excited at the prospect of being able to play again.
Echuca coach Damian Dalziel said the team was looking forward to getting back out on the ground.
“It’s going to be a fantastic day of footy,” he said.
“I think it is a massive opportunity for us to show just how popular the women’s game has become in the region.
“It’s also a chance for people who may have been thinking about playing to see what it’s all about.”
Throughout the day there will be 12 games before the final is held at 6pm.
Matches will include two 12-minute halves and Dalziel believes there will not be any time for players to muck around.
“There will definitely be a competitive edge to the day because no one has been able to play in about 18 months,” he said.
“Training has been going well since we returned after Christmas because we’ve had good numbers on the track, but game day is a completely different scenario.
“Whatever happens on the day, I don’t think people will be able to read too much into it. Everyone will just be trying to shake off the rust.
“We won’t be walking away, even if we are to win, thinking winning a premiership is going to be easy.”
Dalziel will also have the opportunity to see several of his new players in action after being impressed with them during pre-season training.
“We’ve got about four or five new faces at the moment,” he said.
“They all come with different level of experiences which is going to be good for our side.
“Some have predominantly played down back before but I might look to add them into the midfield mix for something different.
“That’s an area I’m still hoping to continue improving before the start of the season.”
AFL Goulburn Murray region general manager Jamie Macri said he was looking forward to an exciting day.
“We hope to see everyone down at Rumbalara on Sunday, February 28 to celebrate the return of local football while also witnessing the amazing talent of our local female footballers,” he said.
AFL Goulburn Murray will be running football activities in the morning before play gets underway.
