Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association — one of the largest umpiring groups in Australia — will help interested community members wave flags, complete boundary throw ins and practice bouncing the ball prior to an information session about the profession at a local level.
The association prides itself on its inclusivity, with many female umpires already involved in the multiculturally diverse environment where all members are made to feel welcome.
Despite this, and largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, association member numbers have decreased and it is actively looking for more people to join in and participate.
“The Come and Try night is a great way for any potential umpires to experience different aspects of field, boundary and goal umpiring,” association president Andrew Moore said.
“Whatever your reason for umpiring may be, be it fitness, to earn some extra cash or to keep involved in the game, our team of coaches and support staff will assist you on your way to umpiring to the best of your ability.”
The association has a strong emphasis on families and social interactivity, which in turn, engenders great camaraderie between members of all ages and their families.
The association is affiliated with AFL Goulburn Murray, supplying field, boundary and goal umpires to Goulburn Valley League, Murray Football League, Kyabram District League, Shepparton District Junior Football League and Northern Country Women’s League.
Members officiate games at football venues in an area stretching from Deniliquin in the north, Mansfield in the east, Rochester in the west and Seymour in the south and everywhere in between.
There is no cost to attend the event, which will be held from 6pm to 7.30pm.
