Football and netball clubs in Echuca-Moama and across the district are ramping up preparations for the return of winter sport after it was cancelled in 2020.
Speaking at the Echuca-Moama Sportsmen’s night to raise funds for local businesses, Mew said sport’s comeback was a massive boost for the community’s health.
“Local footy is the heart blood of any country town,” he said.
“People will always look forward to their Saturday to go down to the local club and support their side.
“It gives them an outlet to get away from things, including work. It’s very important get out there and have that time.
“With the COVID-19 pandemic, people haven’t had that opportunity.
“Hopefully, everything is starting to get back to normal again and we really can start to enjoy sport like we have in the past.”
As part of his trip to Echuca-Moama, Mew played a round of golf at Rich River Golf Club on Wednesday, February 24, before taking part in the function at night.
He said he had enjoyed his short stay in town.
“We had a great day, and it was very enjoyable,” he said.
“It’s great to see everyone turn up tonight and have a bit of fun. We’re glad to have done our part to support the community.”
