Campaspe Shire Council moved at Wednesday night's meeting to surrender control of a section of land at the Victoria Park precinct so it could be occupied by five new tennis courts and facilities for the club.
The new courts are to be constructed as a replacement for six courts that were previously removed from the club as part of creating a path for the new Echuca Moama Bridge.
The planned courts will sit north of the Victoria Park netball courts and the club's remaining 11 courts and club house facility.
Echuca Lawn Tennis Club president Brian Gledhill said while things weren't exactly as hoped, progress was a positive for the club.
“We would have preferred the courts to have been closer to the rest of the club,” he said.
“But it's good to know we have moved forward in the process. It's been a long time without the courts and we are happy to know we will soon be closer to getting them.”
But while six courts were lost to the project, only five new courts will be built to accommodate the proposed facility on the site.
“That's one of the disadvantages of being away from the main club,” Gledhill said.
“But it has given us an opportunity to include two hard courts as part of the facility. It opens us up to the ability to play year round and that's a great outcome for our club.”
Major Road Projects Victoria, which took the original courts as part of the construction of the bridge, will fund the construction of the new courts in consultation with Department of Environment Land Water and Planning and the Echuca Lawn club.
“We haven't been given the exact time frame, but we are hoping to see construction begin in the next month,” Gledhill said.
“It's been a long process and a lot of work has gone into it, so knowing we are close to having things really start is a good sign.”
