After being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Southern 80 and Barrie Beehag have been cleared to return for the 2021/22 season.
The Southern 80 will resume its position on the local events calendar, running from February 11-13, with the weekend's famous events including the Breakfast with the Stars.
The Barrie Beehag will return with a completely new look - a 100km race from Torrumbarry to Wills Bend and back.
Moama Water Sports Club president Steve Shipp said the club was excited to finally make the announcement.
“We've been working on this with Ski Racing Australia for a while now,” he said.
“And we couldn't be happier to finally announce we are returning to the water for the new year.
“The Southern 80 is such an important event not only in ski racing but on the Echuca-Moama events calendar.
“We desperately missed not having the event last year and we can't wait for it to return.”
Shipp said the event went so far beyond just the race itself.
“The Southern 80 is so important to local tourism,” he said.
“After the year we have all been through, we need something like this that can bring the tourist dollar back into our community, and the 80 has always been fantastic for that.
“It's a huge part of our community and draws incredible crowds every year, and we can't wait to see that again.
“On top of that we have a new look Barrie Beehag, which we have now established a permanent position for in the calendar, which has been a long term goal of the club.
“Now that we have, we hope to build the Beehag into another major tourism driver.”
NSW minister for tourism Stuart Ayres said the return of both events was a huge win for sport lovers across the region.
“The return of the Southern 80 and the Barrie Beehag ski races is fantastic news for sports lovers, and visitors to the Murry River region,” he said.
“After the challenges of the past year, there’s never been a better time to plan a visit and enjoy all that the Riverina Murray region has to offer.”
