But for Cobram’s Lauren Sneddon, aiming and firing a rifle is second nature.
The Cobram local will compete at the Target Rifle Australia National Championships in the junior division in Brisbane over Easter.
For Lauren, it's a prospect that fills her with much excitement, and she credits her love for shooting to her father.
Lauren competes in target shooting, which she explained involves using a .22 rifle, lying down and shooting targets 50m away.
The Cobram local often spends time at the Nurmurkah small bore rifle range and said the key to shooting was not to overthink it.
“You’ve got to have a positive and clear mindset.”
Lauren said posture was incredibly important, as well as the ability to stay very still.
Though going to Nationals would be a nerve-racking prospect for anyone, Lauren does have experience on her side, having competed in local and state tournaments in the past.
Asked why she enjoys competitive shooting so much, Lauren said it wasn’t a typical sport and that it could be considered an unusual sport for women to get into.
“For me, it gives me a bit of an adrenaline rush,” she said.
“It really helps clear the mind."
As for where she wants to go with her shooting, Lauren said she wanted to reach the top leagues.
“I would love to make an Australian squad, and going to Nationals is a good way to get selected,” she said.
