Both sides took the game on in the first term of the Heathcote District league match-up, with the Bloods surprising the Bombers with three goals. However, L-G bagged three of its own and a trio of behinds to eke out a three-point lead at quarter-time.
The Bombers couldn’t find consistent form in the second period, notching only one goal and a couple of behinds to Elmore’s pair of goals and sole behind which saw the Bloods take the lead by two points.
However, L-G’s lack of form was a distant memory in the third quarter as it kicked four unanswered goals to take the lead back off the Bloods, who could only squeeze out a behind.
Elmore managed to kick a couple more goals, but the Bombers refused to give up despite their inaccuracy, kicking three goals and nine behinds in the final quarter.
L-G’s second-half takeover cemented a 36-point win over an Elmore outfit that shouldn’t have given it that much trouble. The final score was L-G 11.14 (80) to Elmore 7.2 (44).
Bombers coach Shannon Keam wasn’t thrilled with his team’s performance. He felt the players didn’t play as a cohesive unit, leading to them trailing at half-time.
“There was a lack of connection on our behalf. It was a bit of an arm wrestle the whole day,” he said.
“We turned the ball over a bit too much. We kept Elmore within arm’s reach, but we could sneak away with a victory in the second half.
“We just needed to maintain the ball in our hands and get a good look at the goal, that is the key to winning.
“We kicked 3.9 in the last quarter, which was wasteful, so that is something we are looking to improve upon in the next few weeks, our goal-kicking.”
Keam highlighted some of his men who played well and contributed to the team’s round 13 success.
“Brad Green, Caleb Hislop and Clay McGregor in the midfield were pretty solid all day,” he said.
“Max Hagan in the backline gave us plenty of rebounds and Blake Dye contested well for us up front.”
L-G has a bye in round 14 but will play at home against Heathcote in round 15.
“We’ve got a bye next week and it’s come at a good time for us. It’ll be great to refresh and do things a little bit differently at training and reload in a couple of weeks’ time,” Keam said.
HDNL
Elmore was too much for fourth-placed Leitchville-Gunbower in round 13 of the HDNL.
In a competitive game between the third and fourth-placed sides, the Bloods emerged victorious by 22 goals, 56-34, sending a strong message to the rest of the competition.
Elmore now has one more win and two fewer losses separating it from the Bombers in fourth and is now eyeing a jump into second if Colbinabbin slides.
L-G will need to reassess and bounce back against Heathcote following its bye next week if it wishes to avoid falling down the ladder, with the fifth-placed Saints nipping at its heels.
