With two rounds in the books, Rich River moved into top spot on the ladder thanks to a resounding 16-61 to 0-47 victory over cross-river rivals Echuca.
Peter Nesbitt skippered his side to a narrow 18-17 win over Stephen Cunnington on the first rink, giving Rich River the upper hand early.
Stan Barket then had a 22-17 win over Echuca’s James Ferrier before Jason McCloy defeated Ian Page 21-13 to round of the clean sweep for Rich River.
Down the road, it was Rochester who earned its first win of the season with a victory over Deniliquin.
With a bye the round prior, Saturday was the first time Rochester was in action this season, and it earned a hard-fought 13-63 to 3-58 win over Deni to get the new campaign off on the right foot.
It was a tight contest across all three rinks, with Rochy and Deni each earning one win, while the last ended in a tie.
Rochester skip Richard Feuk and his Deni counterpart Shane Laing could not be split, with the two level at 18 shots a piece.
Simon Chisholm earned a 22-20 win for Deniliquin against Timothy Quinlan, but the third rink swung the result Rochester’s way.
John Weeks was too good for Jamie Shields prevailing 25-18, a result that lifted Rochester to a five-shot win.
In the weekend’s other clash, Tongala outclassed Mathoura 15-80 to 1-38.
Tonny skip Bradley Tinning’s team of Wayne Cowley, William Riedell and Barry Tinning had a thumping win, defeating Mark Quor’s outfit 35 shots to six.
Jarryd Tinning too led his Tongala quartet to victory, defeating Mathoura’s Michael Humphreys 26-13.
Tongala couldn’t quite earn wins on all three rinks, however, with Tonny’s Greg Lyon and Mathoura’s Peter Holzer playing out a 19-19 draw to salvage a point for Mathoura.
With two rounds played, Rich River sits alone on top of the ladder with two wins from two.
Moama, who had a bye last weekend, and Rochester sit just behind them, each with one win so far. Tongala, with one win and one loss, rounds out the top four.
In the midweek pennant competition last week, Mathoura and Rochester each claimed a pair of wins.
On Tuesday, Rochester topped Deniliquin 14-60 to 2-56, while Mathoura prevailed 13-63 to 3-50 against Echuca and Moama defeated Rich river 16-79 to 0-38.
Later in the week on Friday, Mathoura outclassed Moama 16-65 to 0-52. Rochester blitzed Rich river 14-68 to 2-52 and Echuca claimed its first win 14-65 to 2-55 over Deniliuin.
Mathoura and Rochester (2-0) are first and second to start the new season, ahead of Echuca and Moama (1-1) and Deni and Rich River (0-2).
