Taking part in their first match of the season eight weeks after they were first meant to take to the court, Rochester earned a narrow win over Echuca 2.
Last season’s grand finalists won six sets to Echuca 2’s seven, but Rochester won 77 games to 73 to win the tie.
Hosts Echuca 2 got off to a solid start with Ryan More and Chris Potter both winning their men’s singles rubbers, but Rochy battled back in the doubles.
Rochester pair Nash Hocking and Todd Woodfine won 8-5 before Woodfine and Brad Major prevailed 8-3, with the visitors winning two of the three men’s doubles rubbers.
The two teams split the four women’s doubles and mixed doubles matches, but Rochy did just enough to earn victory thanks, in part, to a key 8-1 win by Karen Taylor and Kate Familari and a pivotal 8-4 result for Brad Major and Rachael Major in the final rubber of the match.
Down the road, LBU 2 won an all-Lockington encounter over LBU 1 9-92 to 4-78.
LBU 2 won both men’s singles set and two of the three men’s doubles rubbers to hold a strong lead early on.
The two sides split the four mixed doubles games, but LBU 2 again won two of the three women’s doubles rubbers, helping propel them to victory.
It was a great day out for LBU 2’s David Squires, Noah Condliffe and Narelle Bacon, with the trio each winning all of their rubbers.
In an Echuca showdown, Echuca 1 defeated Echuca 3 to to earn their first victory of the season.
The reigning premiers won 11 sets to Echuca 3’s two.
With two rounds in the books, LBU 2 sits in top spot, ahead of Rich River 1, Rochester 1, Echuca 2 and Echuca 1.
In Division 2, Elmore one topped Echuca 5 7-60 to 6-56, Echuca 7 powered past Rochester 2 7-59 to 6-49 and Echuca 4 was too strong for Echuca 6 9-71 to 4-45.
