After a 28-goal draw in the teams’ round-three meeting, the two sides decided to run it back in their second encounter, this time putting up 32 goals apiece to once again share the points.
Cobram did look to break away early in the encounter at Echuca South Recreation Reserve, taking the first quarter 11-7, and the Tigers pressed their advantage in the second, extending the lead to eight goals by the main break.
The Eagles returned fire in the third quarter and set about eating into the lead, reducing the margin to just a single score by three-quarter-time.
Ultimately, a low-scoring fourth quarter would see United earn a minor advantage, 6-5, but the two sides couldn’t be separated at the final whistle.
A place where United and Cobram aren’t mirroring each other is on the league table with Cobram (3-9-2) boasting an extra win over the Eagles (2-10-2).
Remarkably the two sides are also within 0.2 in seasonal goal percentage with Echuca United (68.56) holding a slight advantage over Cobram (68.36).
The Eagles will be up against the wall next weekend when they travel to take on the undefeated Rumbalara.
Magpies clinch close victory
Moama A-grade continued its strong run of form with a win against fifth-placed Deniliquin Rams in round 14.
The first quarter was even-keeled, with the Magpies working overtime on the attacking end, collecting 13 goals to the Rams’ 10.
Consistency was key for Moama, who bagged another 13 goals in the second frame while holding the Rams to eight. It extended its lead to eight at the half-time siren.
In the third, Deniliquin showed it was no pushovers, scoring 13 goals while Moama added 12, the difference now seven with a quarter to play.
Both teams ran out of gas in the final stretch, but the Magpies’ tenacity got them over the line. They added 10 goals to their total, while the Rams managed nine.
Despite a competitive game, Moama walked away with an eight-point win to solidify its second-place standing. It is now eight points clear of third-placed Tongala.
The Magpies will return home to host Mulwala in round 15.
Tongala triumphs over Numurkah
Tongala has earned a healthy boost to its percentage, defeating Numurkah in dominant fashion.
Tonny was always favourite against struggling opposition and lived up to that status early, blitzing ahead 19-4 by the end of the first quarter.
While Numurkah showed more scoring impetus in the ensuing quarters, the premiers continued to compile a big lead, eventually prevailing 72-27.
The important percentage boost keeps Tongala (10-4, 131.14) ahead of Finley (10-4, 121-15) in third position.
Tonny will continue to raid the bottom of the table when it hosts Barooga (1-12-1) next weekend.
