Eagles go down to Numurkah

In one of the better performances from Echuca United this season, the Eagles took it to Numurkah for two quarters in their round 12 Murray Football League clash.

The Eagles have at times this year struggled to muster any attack at all, but that wasn’t the case this time out at Numurkah Recreation Reserve, with United kicking three goals in the first quarter to lead the Blues at the first change.

Numurkah responded in the second, but United continued to get on to the scoreboard and the Blues held only a five-point advantage at half-time.

Maintaining a high-level performance over four quarters can often be the bane of young sides and that proved to be the case for the Eagles on this occasion.

Numurkah established its hold on the game in the third quarter and, while United was able to make occasional raids throughout the second half, the final score was well in favour of the host, 15.19 (109) to 9.4 (58).

Samuel Goodluck and Mitchell Lourey each contributed two goals in one of the Eagles’ stronger scoring performances of the year, while Noah Fletcher, Riley Godfrey, Jackson Lewis, Reece Sidebottom and Jack Tenace added a major each.

Ryan Stobaus was deemed best-on-ground for the Eagles, joined by Sidebottom, Brady Simpson, Bailey Sawyer, Mitchell Boyd and Jackson Lewis among the best.

Echuca United will hope to continue its improved form when it travels to Tongala on July 13.
