The Strikers took out the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association’s A-grade men’s premiership in convincing fashion at the Shepparton Regional Hockey Complex, defeating Echuca-Moama 5-2 in the big dance.
On top all day, the Strikers were clinical on their way to the title and club president Lachlan Russell ― who played in the victory ― said it was nice to get some early goals on the day.
“I think we just played our normal game,” Russell said.
“Just to hold the ball, not to rush forward too much and sort of construct the play rather than being too direct towards goal.
“Echuca snuck a couple of goals in at the end of the game to make the score 5-2, but I think it was pretty comfortable for most of the game.”
The Strikers boasted a number of contributors, with Sam Holland, Xavier McBain and James McBain scoring goals, while Simon Cole struck a brace.
Russell praised Duncan Moodie’s performance in the decider, while Xavier McBain took home the best-on-turf gong.
“Everyone did their role, everyone played really well,” he said.
“It’s always good and satisfying to come away with a premiership.”
For Echuca-Moama, Wade Oliver, Cameron Kenley and Regan More performed well, while Troy Kenny and Ryan More got on the score sheet.
The result draws to a close what was an impressive season for the Strikers’ A-grade men’s side.
Undefeated after 13 games, a round nine draw against SYC was all that stood between the team and a perfect year.
With the season now complete, Russell took the time to thank everyone who helped the association on and off the turf throughout the year.
“A big thanks to all the volunteers and the GVHA executive committee,” he said.
“Nothing gets done without people putting their hand up to help, so a big thank you to everyone who helped out throughout the year.”
