Over 180 primary students from eight schools competed at the event, with the winners qualifying for the regional finals in Swan Hill on Thursday, March 17.
Students from St Mary's, Echuca, Twin Rivers, Rochester, Echuca East, St Augustine’s, Kyabram (P-12), and Lockington Primary Schools all took part, with St Mary’s being crowned the overall winners on the day, just ahead of Echuca.
Echuca PS student Kayla O’Grady, Sam Henson from St Mary’s and St Joseph's Rochester’s Emily McMillan were some of the standout performers on the day.
Henson racked up quite the collection of blue ribbons, winning all four of his individual events in the 9/10 boys age group, as well as the team relay.
O’Grady won three individual events — the 11 girls freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke — and was also part of Echuca’s winning relay team.
She had fantastic swims in all three of her individual events, posting times multiple seconds faster than the boys competitors in her age group.
McMillan was sensational at the carnival, winning the 12/13 girls backstroke, freestyle and butterfly events.
She was the fastest swimmer on the day, with her times in each of those events the fastest overall from any age group.
Ayla McAsey from St Mary’s was the multi-class winner in both the freestyle and the backstroke.
Ivy Walker from Echuca was also great at the carnival, winning the 9/10 girls freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, and finishing third in the breaststroke.
Fellow Echuca student Abby McCarty finished first in the 11 girls butterfly and second in the breaststroke.
St Mary’s student Charlotte Wilson won the 12/13 girls breaststroke and finished second in the backstroke and butterfly.
Henson, McMillan and O’Grady have all qualified for the regional finals in Swan Hill later this month, as well as all first-place competitors.
Overall, 15 students from St Mary’s, 15 from Echuca and one from St Joseph's Rochester will be heading to Swan Hill.
Swimmers can only enter two individual events and relays at regionals, with competitors choosing their events if they have won more than two.
Winners at the regionals in Swan Hill will then qualify for the State Championships in Melbourne.
