High School tennis stars represent at state

Jack McGrillen, Emma Wettenhall and James Gatacre.

Three Deniliquin High School students helped the Riverina tennis team to a top 10 finish at this year’s NSW Combined High Schools Boys and Girls Tennis Championships.

Emma Wettenhall, Jack McGrillen and James Gatacre participate in the state competition at the Bathurst Tennis Centre over four days, playing against some of the state’s finest young talent.

This year’s championships featured a new format, with both boys' and girls' competitions combined in the same event.

Emma won a number of matches in singles and had some close battles in the doubles.

She improved as the week went on and was an enthusiastic team player.

Jack’s ‘never give up attitude’ showed that he is a player of the future, and he also improved as the week went on.

James won some of his singles matches easily, and had some close results in his doubles.

The Riverina team was managed by Temora High School teacher Vicki Breust.

“It was a privilege to take Emma, Jack and James away, and they represented Deniliquin High School in an excellent manner,” Breust said.

“They were all very courteous on and off the court.”

The Riverina team finished the tournament eighth overall.
