With the current lighting at the oval labelled “terrible” by Cobram Football Netball Club President Peter Beasley, the funding will provide a much-needed upgrade to the facility.
“It’s fantastic news,” Beasley said.
“I don’t think our lights have been upgraded for probably 20-25 years and it’s got to the stage that they certainly need some work on them.”
Beasley explained that not only would the new lighting have a positive impact on the football and netball club, but on the other competitions that make use of the ground.
“If you take into account the probably 100 footballers on a Tuesday and Thursday night and the 150-200 on a Friday night it will certainly be appreciated by all those participants,” he said.
“Lighting our recreation reserves has become pretty expensive to upgrade and replace so there’s no doubt our facility needs to be helped in some way.
“To get that kind of funding will certainly be fantastic for the club and for the junior footy.”
State Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy said he was pleased to see his advocacy gain traction.
“The Cobram FNC has been very active in asking for this, and I have raised this in Parliament before, so I am pleased to say that a Liberal and Nationals government will make this commitment,” McCurdy said.
“This is delivering a fair share of funding to Cobram to help get more people involved in local sports, and also extending the hours that training can occur during the week after dark.
“This is a great win for the Cobram community, which only a Liberals and Nationals government will deliver.”
