Echuca’s Annabel Johnson continued her remarkable rise to the top echelon of women’s football with an AFLW debut for Geelong against North Melbourne at Arden St on Saturday night.
Johnson was one of eight Cats’ players to make their debuts for the club in the round one season-opener against the Roos.
The 21-year-old’s selection was confirmed on Friday night.
Johnson’s Cats went toe-to-toe with North, overcoming a goalless opening half to hold a two-point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Roos proved too classy with a two-goal-to-none final quarter, but it was nonetheless a bright opening hit-out for Johnson, who previously plied her trade in Geelong’s VFLW side before the club took her in the AFLW draft with pick 15.
Donning the number 30 jumper, Johnson finished the day with six touches, three marks and a tackle playing out of the Cats’ defensive half.
