He doesn’t seem to think so just yet despite the conversation surrounding his rising prospects in Australian cricket.
The 21-year-old’s name has been thrown around in discussions regarding Australia’s tour of India in February after claiming 18 wickets from his four appearances for Victoria.
While the upcoming home series against the West Indies and South Africa boasts a settled Aussie line-up, opportunity may arise on the sub-continent for a second spinner to partner Nathan Lyon.
But the Moama cricket product told the Riverine Herald it’s not an opportunity that has crossed his mind yet.
“For me, that’s still a long way away,” Murphy said.
“It’s always nice to be mentioned in that area, but I think there’s still a lot of work for me to do in the meantime for that to be in the realm of possibilities.
“I’m a long way off that at the moment, and I know that.
“I think if you get caught up looking too far ahead into the future you can get a little bit ahead of yourself.
“For me it’s just about focusing on what I can control with Victoria, and if I can keep putting performances on the board then down the track that sort of stuff looks after itself.
“I’m not too caught up in that at the moment.”
Murphy admits his focus remains squarely in the shield arena and building his confidence in the red-ball game.
“I always knew that Jon Holland was still going to be the number one spinner and I just wanted to be there as an option if they wanted to play two spinners,” he said.
“Hopefully I can build a bit of continuity in Shield cricket and keep developing my confidence at that level.
“Still only being quite young and inexperienced at state level I want to keep building on what I’ve been able to do in the one-day stuff.
“I’m a bit more confident in myself. The main goal this summer is to try and contribute to some shield wins.”
Murphy’s promise in the white-ball game has also seen him re-sign for the Sydney Sixers for its upcoming Big Bash League campaign.
“I’m back for the next couple of years, so I’m pretty excited about that,” he said.
Murphy has been named for Victoria’s shield clash against Tasmania, which starts this Saturday, October 29, at Blundstone Arena.
