For the second year in a row, Cass Millerick found herself taking two titles home from the open.
This year it was an all-Moama combination that brought some of the success for Millerick, partnering with fellow Steamer Kevin Anderson to take out the mixed pairs.
The Moama duo dominated the group stage of the competition, defeating two of their three opponents by 20 shots, while also scoring a comfortable eight-shot win in the remaining match.
Anderson and Millerick also cruised through the early rounds of knockout play, only encountering resistance once they reached the quarter-finals.
A 14-10 win in that match led them to a final four confrontation with another Moama representative, Matt Robertson, and partner Leeane Poulson (Club Helensvale).
Robertson and Poulson won six of the first nine ends, with one drawn, in the semi, each by a single shot, but Anderson and Millerick scored three in each of their two victories to keep things level.
In the second half of the match, the all-Moama combination recovered to win four of the final five ends and claim an 11-7 victory.
Anderson and Millerick would go on to dispatch Melton’s Chelsea Pollock and Todd Trewarne in the final, 14-8.
Kevin Anderson prevailed in the mixed pairs and men’s triples at the Bowls Victoria Open.
Both Anderson and Millerick also had success in other parts of the tournament.
Millerick and Selina Goddard (NZ) successfully defended the women’s pairs title they won last year.
The duo trailed 11-4 nine ends into the final but brilliantly scored 15 shots to 2 over the last six ends to prevail 19-13.
Goddard would also claim the women’s singles and triples titles, earning the Barb Gilbert Medal for best performance across the competition, an award won by Millerick last year.
Millerick, Moama’s Olivia Cartwright, and Olivia Slade (Lilydale) weren’t able to back up their women’s triples triumph from a year ago, dropping one game in the group stage to narrowly miss the finals.
Anderson partnered up with fellow Steamer Cameron Keenan and Bendigo’s Luke Hoskin to take the men’s triples.
The trio were rarely in trouble throughout the event, eventually defeating clubmate Matt Robertson, along with Tallygaroopna duo Mitch Sidebottom and David Daws, 17-7 in the final.
The hits kept coming in the junior divisions, with local Jacob Brighton pairing with Fitzroy’s Eridani Wheeler to finish as runners-up in the under-18s open pairs.
The pair cruised into the final 10-0 and grabbed the first end against eventual winners Sam Nemeth (Bendigo) and Bailee Randall (Deer Park) but eventually went down 8-1.
