Border Raiders FC’s women’s, men’s and junior sides all got their seasons under way on Saturday and Sunday.
The Border Raiders women’s side took its first steps into the BASL League 1 after earning promotion to the higher division last season.
Its opening contest was at Howley Oval in Tatura against the Ibises.
Playing a fast and physical style, Tat proved too much for the newly promoted Border Raiders, getting the win 7-2.
The Ibises struck early while the Border Raiders were still finding their feet, scoring twice within the first five minutes.
Regular goal threat Asha Davies, who scored 30 goals last campaign, popped up for the Border Raiders, halving the deficit in the 26th minute.
Tatura was back in the goals in the 37th minute, adding two more to its total for a 4-1 half-time lead.
As they had been at the start of play, the Ibises were lethal to begin the second half, extending the lead to four, five minutes after the resumption.
The Border Raiders had some hope of a fightback after a second yellow card saw Tat’s Isabella Pelligrino sent from the field, but Tatura responded with a sixth goal shortly after.
Davies popped up again for Echuca Moama, grabbing a second goal, but Tatura closed things out with its seventh just before the end of the 90 minutes.
The Border Raiders will head to Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve this Saturday as they continue their campaign against FC Eaglehawk, which was also beaten in the opening round.

The Border Raiders men had a much different start to their season, handily defeating Deniliquin Wanderers in their BASL 2 clash.
On their home turf of Jack Eddy Oval, the Border Raiders scored three in each half to post an impressive 6-0 win.
A flurry of early scores had the Wanderers reeling, as Jack Ryan, Daniel Rizani and Jean-Claude Herman all struck between the 10th and 16th minute to build a 3-0 advantage.
After the break, Dillon Cahill added to the lead before Herman and Rizani each struck again before the final whistle.
The strength of the win makes the Border Raiders the early leaders in BASL 2 as the only side to keep a clean sheet in round one.
A clash against Golden City in North Bendigo is next on the agenda, the fixture coming at 3pm on Sunday.

The Border Raiders under-16 B squad kicked off its year with a win, dominating Spring Gully White 4-0.

In under-12 A, the club went down 1-0 in a close battle with Strathfieldsaye Colts United Black.
In 12 C, the Border Raiders Vikings defeated Castlemaine Gold 8-1, and in 12 D the Border Raiders Pirates prevailed 3-0 over Epsom Stingers.
