MVCA opener and reunion in a fortnight

On the Saturday, the Deniliquin Rhinos A-grade side will take on Barooga at Deniliquin Memorial Park in the opening round of the Murray Valley Cricket Association’s one-day fixture from 12.30pm.

Following the game is the sportsman’s night from 7.30pm, with three notable cricketing speakers secured - former Australian men’s ODI and T20 captain Aaron Finch, Australian men’s cricket coach Andrew McDonald and South Australian First Class and Big Bash League player Tim Ludeman.

Tickets are now on sale for $70, with dinner included. Drinks will be available for purchase on the night.

There is also an option to donate to the DDCA Future Fund, to continue to improve the facilities in the Deniliquin and district area.

This week’s reunion feature story is on the 2003 B-grade grand final, won by Wakool.

Wakool wins B grade premiership

Wakool continued their reign in DDCA B-grade cricket, taking out the premiership for the third time in a row.

Wakool now have the overall premiership shield to display alongside their one day shield.

The third, final and deciding match of the grand final was played on Saturday at Edward River Oval.

Town, batting first after winning the toss were unable to reach a score to challenge Wakool.

Only two Town batsmen made it into double figures.

Toby Chappell made 38 in his number three position and Lindsay Newton was left on 14 not out.

Mitch Hudson and Anthony Oggian took three wickets each.

Hudson finishing with 3/23 off five overs and Oggian with 3/18 off six overs.

A total of 114 was achieved by Town leaving Wakool 115 to chase to secure their third consecutive premiership.

In reply, opener Phil Loomes was gone for two, which brought Ryan Gleeson and DDCA B grade cricketer of the year David Hulands together.

These two took to the Town bowling and set about a quick victory.

Gleeson made 32 and Hulands remained not out on 54.

Wakool brought up 116 runs for the loss of just three wickets in their 24th over.

Wakool captain David Cordell thanked both his team and Town for a fantastic grand final and congratulated Wakool on a superb season.

“There is no better way to send an old bloke off than like this,” Cordell said on his retirement from the team.
