SRA released a statement on June 8, announcing the withdrawal of all event sanctions until further notice.
The decision came after an undisclosed safety incident at the Queensland state titles caused competition to be halted.
Ski Racing Queensland has yet to make a statement on the incident.
The SRA announcement also put a halt to racing at the South Australian state titles, which were being held concurrently.
“The board of Ski Racing Australia in consultation with state association delegates wish to advise that all event sanctions are withdrawn due to recent on water incidents until further notice,” the SRA Board said in the statement.
“The board need to continually assess what is the best interests of the sport, both long and short term. Therefore, this decision is made to ensure that we continue to evaluate all the safety aspects of our sport to protect our members, and in respect for those families involved.”
Two prominent events on the Ski Racing Australia calendar are held in Echuca Moama, with the Beehag 100 scheduled for November, and the Southern 80 for February.
The 2024 Southern 80 was cancelled early on the second day of racing after the death of a competing skier.
Both events are organised and run by Moama Water Sports Club.
Club president Steve Shipp told The Riv that MWSC hasn’t received any further information from SRA regarding the suspension of racing, but he is confident the sport is not in jeopardy.
“I don’t think it’s anything permanent,” he said.
“There was an incident up at the races in Queensland and until they investigate that, that’s why they’ve (suspended racing).
“It’s the end of the season anyway, so it’s not going to make any difference really (to the racing schedule).”
