More than 80 swimmers from a dozen clubs from across Victoria will descend on Aquamoves for the indoor 25m pool competition on Sunday, March 26, the first short-course meet of the season.
Short-course indoor swimming has the same events and distances as standard outdoor long-course events, with the competitions held indoors during the winter months.
“All the same swimming distances occur, it just means more turning. There is a lot more sprinting in the indoor set-up. It means that you can swim and compete all year round,” Shepparton Swimming Club committee member Stuart Shaw said.
“The kids are actually quicker with their times in a 25m pool.”
Racing will start at 11am on Sunday.
People looking to get into competitive swimming will have the chance to dip into the action as well, with the club also hosting a come-and-try session on Sunday morning.
“It is for any kids who want to come and try racing and see what the club is about,” Shaw said.
“It is a good opportunity for them to check it out and to see if they want to take up swimming as the sport for them.
“Come down, bring as many people as you can and give it a try. Even if you just want to have a look or ask questions, everyone is more than welcome.”
It is going to be an action-packed weekend for the swim club, with some of its members also running a special fundraiser on Saturday.
A group of young swimmers will be cooking a barbecue and selling chocolates at Fairleys SUPA IGA Shepparton to raise money for their upcoming trip to the Australian Age Championships on the Gold Coast next month.
Eight swimmers – a record number from Shepparton Swimming Club – will be jumping in the pool at the week-long event.
Shaw said the fundraiser would go a long way to helping the young group make the trip to Queensland.
“The funds are going towards helping them get there because it is not cheap to fly there and spend the week there. Accommodation is through the roof,” he said,.
“They are able to represent their club, their town and their state at a national level. We have only ever had five go up before at any one time, and now we have eight. That has never been done before.”
Fairleys SUPA IGA Shepparton, the location of the fundraiser, is at 177-193 Numurkah Rd, Shepparton.
