The Bruce Johnstone Trophy is held in honour of a huge contributor to the club, whose life was chronicled in a biography by former Australian Basketball coach Lindsay Gaze.
To say Bruce’s life was colourful is akin to suggesting the price of petrol is expensive, a massive understatement, and all members aspire to adding their name to the perpetual shield located prominently in the snooker room.
This year’s finalists are Michael Barclay, who is now leading the Player Of The Year stats, and Darren Edwards, who is finding his way back to his best form.
The final was contested over a best of three frame format after the AGM on Monday.
Members were all hopeful that long time club President Darren Thompson would continue on in this role and were very confident he would have the necessary votes to be elected again this year.
Darren is the engine room and leader of the club and puts in many hours to ensure its ongoing popularity and success. In advance of the meeting, the club passed on their public thanks for everything you do for the club Darren.
Another annual event that members look forward to is a visit to Albury Commercial Club where members play singles events in the morning and doubles events in the afternoon against Commercial Club members.
This year’s trip was a roaring success although Captain Darren is re-thinking the strategy for next year after the ClubMulwala contingent led after the singles rounds but fell away in the afternoon doubles.
Thanks again to ClubMulwala for sponsoring the transport to and from Albury for this much enjoyed event.
Other recent events have seen Rick Conomy continuing his very strong recent form with a victory in the July Diggers Tribute over Deb Harbrow on Monday, July 11. This was a very evenly fought black ball finish and both Deb and Rick are to be congratulated on their play to get to and contest the final. The social event on Wednesday, July 20 saw Tony Cincotta victorious over first time finalist Martin Demetzel.
Well played Tony and congratulations to you Martin on playing out your first final. Michael Barclay continued his very hot form when he took out Nev Page on Wednesday, July 20.
Michael has an appointment with the handicapper at the end of July due to his excellent results over recent weeks.
It was the club’s pleasure to host a visit from staff and students of Yarrawonga College P-12 on Wednesday. July 20.
The school and parents of all participants should be very proud of how the guests conducted themselves during their time and the snooker club hope they enjoyed it as much as the members did.
Snooker members very much look forward to growing the association with the school and continuing to promote the sport amongst younger people.
As people can see on the ClubMulwala website and in its members newsletter, the snooker club welcome new members or anyone who may like to give snooker a try.
ClubMulwala sponsors the snooker club very generously so value for money ratio for players is very high indeed.
There are a variety of events held every Monday and Wednesday evening and there are plenty of opportunities for new players to join or come along to try the facilities out.
The snooker club have 2 excellently maintained full size tables, which have recently been re-surfaced and a new state of the art lighting system. The snooker room is available for competition, practice and visitor use, and the club has its own regularly updated handicapping system to ensure players from beginners to advanced level can compete equally.
There are also plenty of experienced and skilled players who can help with advice and tips on how to improve your game or perhaps adapt it for those who have played pub or social pool in the past.
